OTTAWA — Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is proud to announce an expansion of its free library card membership. The membership is now available to urban Indigenous communities residing in the Gatineau region, and residents of Kitigan Zibi Anishinaabeg First Nation and Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, using a self-declaration method. This initiative eliminates jurisdictional barriers and affirms OPL’s commitment to equitable and respectful access for Indigenous peoples.
“This is one of many steps OPL is taking to centre Indigenous voices and experiences in its library services,” said OPL’s CEO and Chief Librarian, Sonia Bebbington. “It builds on the relationship established with the urban Indigenous communities in Ottawa and the Anishinabe Algonquin communities of Kitigan Zibi and Pikwakangan during the design of Ādisōke, the future home of OPL’s Central branch, as well as on the important — and ongoing —work of OPL's Indigenous Services team.”
Indigenous individuals can sign up for a free library card by visiting any OPL branch.
